Echo's Drawing Design Process on How to Draw Cartoon Animals Digitally
I draw like this ....
First I think of a design , a background or a setting into which I like to place my characters. Sometimes I just like to drawn the cartoon animal only without any background. Once I get started I usually make a black underline drawing , defining the anatomy of the cartoon animal I am going to draw and then take it from there . Once I am happy with the approximate structure and anatomy guidelines I change the opacity of the black underline drawing so it remains faded in the background but not prominent. That helps me to get the proportions of the animal drawing right. If I base my cartoon animals on a realistic animal I might check the anatomy of lets say a realistic cat, or a wolf , tiger etc to get some inspirationaf I create a pure fantasy animal drawing then I might just doodle the underlying drawing until I am happy with the results ..adding and changing as I go along
TECHNIQUE 1 - COLORING LAYER over UNDERDRAWING
After I changed the opacity of the underdrawing I go over the underdrawing straight with colors marking the various different shapes of the creature
I like drawing in the eyes at this point to give my cartoon animals their character.
Then I work on finding the right expression for the eyes that fit the mood, the scene or the emotional feeling of the situation.
Once happy with the general eye shape I draw in the markings, body traits and any identifying fur, skin or pelt patterns. When the basic color scheme is set and I am happy with the way all the drawing aspects fit together I start with the shading.
Shading the cartoon animals can take a lot of time , working out where the light comes from, where the shaded areas fall and how to best make it look right. To help me remember the various color shades I use on my cartoon animal I often create color reference dots that I can delete later but at the time of drawing they help me remember what colors to use whilst shading the animal drawings .I finish off by adding my artist signature to the final drawing
TECHNIQUE 2-COLORING LAYER OUTLINE
with Technique 2 I start again with the underdrawing and once that is accomplished I again lower the opacity to put that layer into the background of my drawing. Then I create a clean crisp black outline drawing based on the underdrawing sketch but only with one clear line rather than sketched scribble lines. Next I add the color much the same as technique 1 after the coloring base layer is complete I re-enforce the black outline back into the foreground of my animal drawing Then I shade much the same way as Technique 1. I finish off again with my Artist Echo Sig :3
